“The Nutcracker” is everywhere this time of year. But how about the Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn version?  Well, it’s at Orchestra Hall today through Saturday, along with dancers from Minnesota Dance Theatre and our MN Orchestra, all under the direction of Roderick Cox. And they’ll be performing some of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker music as well!

Schoolkids will be streaming into the Hall Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to see and hear this imaginative performance that pairs Tchaikovsky’s familiar music with Ellington/Strayhorn’s jazzy versions (for example, “Dance of the Reed Flutes” becomes “Toot Toot Tootie Toot”). Their teachers have been given terrific preparation materials containing info about the music, the composers, the instruments, the performers, etc.  You can read it too!  Just click here:  http://www.minnesotaorchestra.org/images/education/pdf/1516_swingin_nutcracker.pdf

On Saturday afternoon these concerts will be performed twice for you and your family!  A few tickets remain (just $12), so dance on over to the MN Orchestra website to grab yours:   http://www.minnesotaorchestra.org/buy/tickets/browse-calendar/eventdetail/580/-/family-concert-swingin-nutcracker#.Vl7-bnarTIW
